Villus Structure

The lining of the small intestine are covered in villi, which are adaptive for effective diffusion. Villi help in increasing the surface area of the small intestine for absorption of nutrients. They have a large surface area, good blood supply to keep up the concentration gradient and short diffusion distances.
  • Epithelium:Only one cell think so that there is a short distance for diffusion
  • Globlet cell: Produces mucus
  • Network of capillaries: supply blood to keep up the concentration gradient of blood for diffusion to take place
  • Lacteal: Carries away the nutrients
